About sandspiel

Max Bittker's sandspiel is a digital sandbox in the tradition of classic falling-sand games. You choose an element, paint it onto the screen and watch what happens as it interacts with everything else.

Sand piles up, water flows and pools, fire spreads through plants and wood, and some elements combine to create surprising reactions. There are no levels or scores, only experiments, which makes it a relaxing place to build tiny landscapes, set off chain reactions or simply see what mixing two materials does. Players have also shared many of their creations in an online gallery.

How to play sandspiel

  • Mouse or touch - draw the selected element
  • Element buttons - choose what to paint

Playing sandspiel on a computer

sandspiel has no levels or scores; it is a falling-sand toy that opens as soon as you press Play now. Pick an element from the buttons, then hold the left mouse button and draw it onto the screen. Sand piles up, water pools, fire spreads through plants and wood, and some elements react with each other. Try building a wooden structure and setting it alight to see the chain reaction.

Playing sandspiel on a phone or tablet

sandspiel works nicely with touch. Tap an element button to choose it, then drag your finger across the canvas to paint with it. Landscape gives you a wider canvas to play with. Because there is no goal or timer, it makes a relaxed phone toy for a few minutes; try mixing elements to discover reactions you have not seen before.

Tips and tricks

  • Try fire near plants or wood to see it spread
  • Build walls first to contain liquids
  • Mix two elements and watch how they react
