Long before Spelunky became a console and PC hit, Derek Yu released the original as a free game in 2008 and later shared its source code. Spelunky Classic HD is a community update of that version, adding modern touches such as higher resolution support while keeping the original gameplay intact.

Each run drops you into caves that are randomly assembled, so you can never memorize a layout. You dig for gold, rescue a damsel for extra health, dodge spikes, arrow traps and hostile wildlife, and use a limited supply of bombs and ropes to make your own path. One death sends you back to the start, which makes every careful descent feel tense.

Spelunky Classic HD updates Derek Yu's free 2008 original with higher resolution support. After Play now, click the game window once so your keys reach it. The arrow keys move, climb and look around, Z jumps, and X swings the whip or uses whatever you are holding. Caves are built randomly each run, so use Up and Down to look before dropping into unknown areas.

Spelunky Classic HD needs a keyboard. Running with the arrows while jumping on Z and whipping on X takes several keys at once, and the game has no confirmed touch controls. Play on a computer or Chromebook. With only a phone handy, browse titles marked "Desktop and mobile" instead.
